The Best Way To Wash Your Caps Without Ruining Them

Like many people, you probably have your favourite go-to hat (or three) for various occasions. The fact is that caps can get nasty and grimy pretty quickly with wear, between a quick sprint to the bus stop or a weekend hike at MacRitchie Reservoir.
Fret over how to clean your hats without ruining them anymore! Let us take you step-by-step through how to wash and care for your favourite Kydra hat to help prolong its shelf life.
First and foremost, always wash your hats with cold water!
Heat is the number one culprit of hat shrinkage and discolouration – that includes warm water, a washing-machine run on high heat, hair-dryers on a high setting and dishwashers (trust us, it’s a thing).

Regardless of the durability of your accessory fabric, in this case, 100% Cotton Twill, its pristine condition can’t be guaranteed with frequent use of heat.

Caps are a lifesaver for a lot of us. It’s the perfect go-to option on days when you need a little bit of coverage to look more put-together, from supermarket runs to a train ride home after a gym session.
As you move around actively in your Kydra Cap, sweat will get caught between the cap’s brim and your forehead. The most common cleaning method would be to throw them in the washing machine for a quick clean. However, you’ll find more cons than pros with this method, from shrinkage to reshaping issues.

- Fill a clean bucket with cold water and add a couple of mild laundry detergent drops.
- Dunk the cap a few times to create some suds and leave it to soak in the water for 5-10 minutes.
Avoid leaving it submerged longer than recommended to prevent any colour staining. - Rinse the cap thoroughly with cool water.
When dried, cleaning products could appear as white stains if not washed off thoroughly. - Gently pat dry with a towel to help speed up the drying process. Don't forget to dry the metal adjustable tab as well!
Avoid twisting the cap bill to retain its shape. - While the cap is still damp, reshape the hat by gently pinching the bill to give it its shape. Place the cap’s crown on top of an upside-bowl or balled-up towel to reduce crumpling while drying, as it mimics the silhouette of your head.
- Leave out to dry! You may use a fan or hair-dryer on a low/ cool setting to speed things up.
Avoid placing the cap directly under full sunlight to reduce significant colour fading.

If there are especially problematic areas, simply add on spot-cleaning treatment between #2 and #3!
- Target specific stains with a small dab of stain remover treatment or stronger detergent, and gently brush the area with a soft toothbrush.
Pro tip: Shampoo is a stain-removal miracle worker too! - Leave the hat to soak for 10 minutes and check for any stubborn spots remaining after a rinse. If yes, repeat the steps above.
- Once your hat is in the clear, resume with step #3 from and complete the cleaning process!

Though made with the same cotton twill fabric as the Kydra Cap, reversible bucket hats require more meticulous care for maintenance wash. Always check the material, especially during the first few washes, for colourfastness before dunking your bucket hat in the water.
- Take a clean white rag and dip a small spot in a mild detergent.
- Add some water and rub the rag on a coloured area on the cap.
Most pertinent for darker and brighter colours (Black, Navy, Rose). - If there is no fading once the cap is dry with no colour bleed onto the rag, then you’re safe to move on to the washing stage.
