Step Into The Great Outdoors: 3 Outdoor Exercise Activities To Try

This September, we’re encouraging you to embrace the spirit of summer break! Spend your days playing volleyball by the beach, paddling gently along picturesque lakes, and winding down with yoga in the park.
That’s right; we’re back with more suggestions for outdoor workouts so you can make the most of these warm, gorgeous September days. For if the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that life is too short to spend all day cooped up in your flat - working, exercising, and socialising in the same small space.

Step outside your comfort zone - and step outdoors!

3 GREAT OUTDOOR EXERCISE ACTIVITIES TO TRY

You might think there isn’t much out there in terms of outdoor exercise except for jogging or swimming, but boy, are we happy to prove you wrong! There are many ways to have a great, stimulating workout that don’t involve a gym or a studio! Trust us; you’ll have so much fun with these outdoor activities that soon, you’ll be taking your workouts outdoors all the time.

OPTION 1 - PLAY SOME BEACH-SIDE VOLLEYBALL!

Gather your crew and head to the beach on a bright Sunday morning! Instead of wading in the waves or tanning on a pool chair as you might usually do, try this out for size - a lively, spirited game of beach volleyball!

You won’t be alone - beach volleyball is possibly one of the most popular sports in Singapore right now. It’s fun, it’s a great workout, and it’s super easy to pick up.

If you fall in love with the sport or are interested in playing regularly, you could enrol in beach volleyballtraining sessionsat Winds Academy. They have both group and one-on-one classes - this way, volleyball could become your newest weekly workout routine.

Fun fact - there’s even aSingapore Beach Volleyball National Seriesif you’re interested in playing in tournaments!

OPTION 2 - PICK UP THE PADDLES!

Although it can be easy to feel like Singapore is a city-like country, we’re actually a tropical island - and engaging in some fun water sports can be a healthy reminder of its beauty! Paddling and rowing are great endurance activities and are perfect for working on your aerobic fitness. Kayaking, in particular, engages your core through torso rotation movement and works your upper body when you take paddle strokes.

If you’d like to try kayaking, we recommend the gorgeous MacRitchie Reservoir, which is widely regarded as one of Singapore’s most scenic spots.

Head to Paddle Lodge at MacRitchie Reservoir, operated by the Singapore Canoe Federation. Rental starts from $15 per hour for a single or double sit-on-top kayak. For the best view, you could even go at sunset (side note, this would be the perfect romantic date idea!)

OPTION 3 - TRY THE TRAILS LESS TRAVELLED!

If you’ve considered jogging or running outside before but find that it’s not entirely your speed (pun totally intended!), you could try other ways of getting around - such as hiking or cycling!

Slow it down with a trek through nature - There are several scenic nature trails scattered throughout Singapore, and most are perfect for hiking. If you’re worried about convenience, just look for the hiking trail closest to you!

Singapore has an abundance of hiking trails! For instance, you could try trekking through the famous Southern Ridges hiking trail - a connector trail that will take you to many parks, reserves, and historical monuments like the Henderson Waves bridge.

On the other hand, trails like Clementi Forest offer more unique hikes, with abandoned railway tracks, secret tunnels and crossings over muddy streams.

Speed it up with a set of wheels - If you don’t have the time or energy for a drawn-out hike, cycling is also a great outdoor workout!

We recommend that you pick your cycling loop based on your skill level as a cyclist. For instance, if you go to Mount Faber, you’ll be in for one tough workout. Home to Singapore’s highest peak, the elevation and steepness of these slopes will make your cycle up very challenging. This makes it the perfect training spot for experienced riders.

However, more well-known cycling trails like the Changi Airport Connector or the Northern Explorer Loop might be easier for a beginner.

Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! Try these fun and engaging outdoor exercise activities for a change in your workout routine, and we guarantee, soon, you’ll be hooked!
