Your Guide to Staying Ahead of Holiday Calories This Chinese New Year
It’s time for merriment, reuniting, and feasting. That means the Chinese New Year season is afoot!
Right about now, most Singaporeans are getting ready to immerse themselves in festivities. Already, preparations for gastronomic family reunion dinners and neighbourhood celebrations are underway - keeping with the current crowd-control numbers, of course!
All across Singapore, households are thrumming with the anticipation and excitement that only the CNY brings, and we at Kydra couldn’t be more excited to celebrate with you! But, as predictably as we all guzzle pineapple tarts and Lo Hei, we’re probably all too familiar with the feeling of recovering from the season. Groaning as we realise we’ve slacked off on our regular fitness routine.
So, to help you stave off that feeling of post-festivities despair, here are some preemptive suggestions to help you burn off those CNY calories.
Most know what spring cleaning before the New Year symbolises - sweeping away any traces of bad luck so that you can start anew. And in our quest to make 2022 our biggest and most successful year yet, we’ll take all the good luck that we can get!
On the week, before CNY dawns, families across the country make sure their houses are spick and span in time for the New Year. Although most of us feel lazy on spring cleaning day, you should try having some fun with it this year!
Make it a personal challenge - try to see how many workouts you can fit into your spring cleaning. Get inventive!
As you fish out your CNY decorations, try lunging as you move between the cabinets and the countertop. Keep your back straight and bend your knees at 90 degrees, not letting them extend beyond your toes.
Work out your arms and shoulders as you wash windows. Use large circular movements while keeping your core tight and engaged, and switch arms at each window. Also apply the same movement when dusting your shelves!
Dance around the house as you clean! Dancing is an underrated whole-body workout that's so much fun. For perspective, a 30-minute dance class burns between 130 and 250 calories - around the same as jogging!
If you want to get ahead of those CNY calories, try incorporating an extra 30-minute jog to work or around your neighbourhood park.
You really don't have to make this a long-term change to your everyday schedule - jogging for a couple of weeks after CNY should help you regain your fitness so that you don’t completely deviate from your fitness goals during the season.
If jogging isn’t a feasible solution for you, you could just take the simpler way out and extend your existing workout routine for the few weeks following the New Year.

If you normally do a moderately-paced 45-minute spin workout to build your endurance and muscle mass, you might consider alternating this with (or adding!) a HIIT workout to maximise calorie burn after the New Year. For instance, try a cycle of 4 x 40-second pushes in the saddle with light to moderate resistance, followed by a 20-second recovery.

The Crouching Tiger Walk
Animal walks are great movement drills for strength, conditioning and improving your overall movement coordination. This crouching tiger walk by Vahva Fitness is a very low crawl that exercises maximal control in the extension of the elbows.
The Tiger Leap
Let’s raise the bar a tad. This challenging exercise, released on the Official RAWTRICKS Youtube channel, involves conditioning your triceps and core. Get on the floor, launch yourself forward as a tiger would, and try landing on your hands. This one’s not for the faint of heart!
The Tiger Push-up
Pilates master trainer and all-around fitness guru Radhika Karle pioneered the tiger push up, which is basically an advanced and modified form of a standard push-up to emphasise better engagement of the core and upper arms. Watch her tutorial here.
The Core-firing Crouching Tiger
This exercise is the perfect addition to your HIIT circuit, and we suspect it might even be part of your regular routine! According to Tiffani Bachus, certified personal trainer, the core exercise targets the obliques and requires strength, stability, and mobility of the shoulders, abs, hips and back. The most important thing for you to remember is simple - have fun! Enjoy the festivities and the precious time with your family and friends during the New Year. Also, indulge in what your heart desires. We definitely don’t believe you should hold back for fear of gaining some extra calories! Then get back on track with your fitness routine.
