YOGA BEYOND THE MAT WITH 3 YOGIS IN SINGAPORE

Picture ‘Yoga’ and you may conjure an image of someone with an expression of ultimate tranquil bliss while holding a pretzel-like shape that defies logic and gravity. But yoga is so much more than just being a flexible contortionist. Beyond just a physical practice, yoga is the beautiful connection of our body and mind through mindfulness and breath.

On this International Day of Yoga Day, we spoke to and dressed up 3 yogis in Singapore who share how the practice of yoga transcended beyond the mat into all aspects of their lives.

JASMINE TAY | @JASXTAY

"I've learned that I need to look after my body more, that I need to embrace change, and that sometimes it is okay to stop and to give myself some much-needed TLC."ving and generous people you meet along the way.”

K: Who are you off the mat?

J: I am a mother of two who loves to cook and bake. I also enjoy getting in touch with nature and fun-filled activities with my family at the beach.

K: Why did you first pick up yoga?

J: My first yoga class happened 12 years ago in a hot room and it was exactly what I needed from a stressful corporate job. Through yoga, I learned to use my breath as a tool to manage anxiety. I breathe during the challenging postures and through that, I learn to breathe in all difficult situations as it promotes relaxation, mindfulness and positive change. When life gets challenging or chaotic- clarity and relaxation replace fear and stress whenever I pause and take a moment to slow down and breathe.

K: How do you fit Yoga into your busy schedule?

J: My life now has evolved especially after giving birth to two kids and that has reflected in my practice, not just physically but mentally as well. Motherhood is challenging and often takes a toll on my mental health. I believe that self-care is so so important — you can't pour from an empty cup! I am thankful to have my extended family to fill mummy duties so that I get small pockets of time for yoga. That is my kind of luxury for now. I love a sustainable practice that's balanced and mindful because that keeps me calm and grounded in every stage of my life.

K: What is the greatest lesson yoga has taught you?J: What yoga has really taught me, is that everything is a lesson. Everything that happens, past, present and future, is an opportunity to learn—about yourself, the world and your place in it. What have I learnt, in regards to that experience in particular? That I need to look after my body more, that I need to embrace change, and that sometimes it is okay to stop and to give myself some much-needed TLC.

K: How has our gear complemented your practice? Which is your favourite KYDRA item so far and why?J: The Sierra Kyro Midline Bra. The v-neckline of this bra looks flattering and feels supportive overall! The fabric is so soft and smooth which is great for our hot and humid weather. The Kyro Pocket Leggings II is my favourite leggings at the moment and I'm a big fan of pants that are full length. Love the functional feature with the side pockets where I can put stuff. It is lightweight and feels like second skin. The waistband tucks my belly pooch away so it's a great bonus!

MELANIE LANSAKARA | @LANSAKARA

"Yoga has taught me to let go of my ego. That it doesn’t matter what people think of you, how you look in class, or what you can or cannot do. And that really, the most important thing is trying everything with an open heart and mind."

K: Who are you off the mat?M: Off the mat and away from the fitness world, I’m a huge music junkie and foodie. I love getting lost in a good album on the way to the studio or to a workout. With teaching being so physical, I’m hungry a lot so naturally, I’m also always scoping out the best spots to eat!

K: Why did you first pick up yoga?M: I initially picked up yoga as a way to destress from my then corporate job. To be honest, I was one of those people that thought Yoga would be a walk in the park, but it challenged me more than I thought it would!K: How do you fit Yoga into your busy schedule?M: Yoga is interwoven into my life. I incorporate mindfulness in everything I do, such as yogic breath work while I am weight training and of course, I squeeze in a physical practice before my classes whenever I can. I’ve recently also been trying to get back into a regular meditation practice.

K: What is the greatest lesson yoga has taught you?M: To let go of my ego. That it doesn’t matter what people think of you, how you look in class, or what you can or cannot do. And that really, the most important thing is trying everything with an open heart and mind.

K: How has our gear complemented your practice? Which is your favourite KYDRA item so far and why?M: When I’m working out or teaching I like to feel comfortable and light. KYDRA gear definitely helps me feel that way! My favourite so far has to be the Kyro Pocket Leggings and shorts. Apart from the fit being fantastic, I am all about leggings with pockets!

"We are constantly evolving and adapting. Our feelings and emotions are just like the weather; it is never the same. However your body is showing up today, that is exactly how and what it needs. We are never the same each time we step on and leave the mat. But the lessons we learn make this journey unique and whole."

K: Who are you off the mat?S: I’m a wildlife conservationist and field research assistant. You can find me in the forest or on a tree as I conduct field observations and research to collect vital information to help a critically endangered primate species endemic to Singapore - the Raffles’ banded langur. I also advocate for human-wildlife coexistence, especially for the Long-tailed macaques; by conducting joint outreach and training programmes to help people and wildlife live in harmony.

K: Why did you first pick up yoga?S: It was in 2013 as I was recovering from injuries sustained from years of marathons and high-intensity sports. It helped me regain my mobility and improved my mental well-being.

K: How do you fit yoga into your busy schedule?S: Due to the nature of my full-time job where I spend a lot of time in the forest; I get to inculcate walking meditation. I make a commitment to move at least 15 minutes on my mat daily. On top of endurance and strength training, I do a full 1-hour practice once a week - which is a treat!

K: What is the greatest lesson yoga has taught you?S: We are constantly evolving and adapting. Our feelings and emotions are just like the weather; it is never the same. However your body is showing up today, that is exactly how and what it needs. We are never the same each time we step on and leave the mat. But the lessons we learn make this journey unique and whole.

K: How has our gear complemented your practice? Which is your favourite KYDRA item so far and why?S: It is absolutely lightweight and perfect for Singapore’s weather. From yoga to running, it doesn’t limit my range of movement and the range of soft earthy colours is an instant mood lift! KYDRA's gear is absolute comfort wear and sends good vibes! My favourite pick is the Impact Bra and Kyro Pocket Leggings II in Deep Ocean colour. The bra is beautifully designed and provides good support for high and low-intensity workouts. The leggings sit well and are soft like butter. And did I mention pockets! It’s a major win especially if you are running errands. I love it because I can match it with a simple top plus sneakers; and I’m ready to go conquer the day!
