The Workout Essential You Can Never Skip - Sunscreen!

Here in sunny Singapore, the warmest months are upon us! The stretch between April and June contains some of the hottest months each year.
So we thought it’d be the perfect time to remind you of the one workout essential you can never skip out on - sunscreen.
Kydra Squad, you might be able to skip many things when you’re exercising outdoors - you could forget to bring your earphones or lose your favourite scrunchie - but you should never forget your sunscreen. Wearing sunscreen when you’re working out outdoors is simply non-negotiable.
Unfortunately, many of us think that sunscreen is optional. Let us be clear - it’s absolutely not! We’re here to bust some of your sunscreen-wearing myths and convince you never to leave the house without that life-saving lotion.
But First - What Does Sunscreen Do, Really?

Sunscreen protects the outer layer of your skin, called the epidermis, from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
If you’re exposed to those dangerous rays for too long without enough protection, you could be causing your skin some severe damage. Worst case scenario, you’re even increasing your chances of skin cancer - which with the depletion of the ozone layer, is far more likely than we think!
We don’t mean to spook you, but the truth is that prolonged UV exposure is a lot riskier than people realise. Think of sunscreen, available in different strengths, like your stress-free, no-hassle, knight in shining armour.
Sunscreen can even speed up skin recovery and help with issues like hyperpigmentation or wrinkles. Why wouldn’t you choose to bring it along?
MYTH #1
“I only need sunscreen on really sunny days or when I go to the beach.”

Incorrect! You always need to wear sunscreen, from when it’s blazing hot outside to when the sky looks overcast and cloudy. Remember, UV rays do the damage - not the temperature itself.
Clouds and rain don’t block the sun’s UV rays from reaching you - and once the rays penetrate your skin, you could be in some serious trouble. So next time, don’t skimp on the sunscreen on a cool day.
MYTH #2
“I’m only going outside for a few minutes. Why would I need sunscreen?”
If you’re only going outside for a quick 20-minute jog or you’re biking to work, it’s tempting to think that wearing sunscreen won’t make a difference one way or the other.
But all those sweaty commutes and hurried jogs add up! It still counts as you are spending time exposed to harmful UV rays. And if you get into the bad habit of not wearing sunscreen, that’s still several hours a month of sun exposure.
Make a small bottle of sunscreen a staple in your purse. Just slap some on on your way out of your flat, and you’re good to go!

MYTH #3
“I’m going to splurge on an SPF-100 sunscreen because it’s waaaaay more effective.”
This notion is a common misconception, but it has no grounding in truth. You don’t need to splurge on overpriced SPF 100 sunscreen - the benefit it offers you is only around 1% more coverage than SPF 50.
A higher SPF won’t protect you for a more extended amount of time. Instead, focus on thorough, consistent sunscreen application come rain or shine.
According to expert opinion, SPF 30 and above is generally sufficient for Singapore weather, but only if you apply enough of it. Adequate protection would require a teaspoon of SPF 30 sunblock for the whole face. However, SPF 50 or more is usually recommended to get the minimum amount of protection for a smaller quantity of sunscreen applied.
Sunscreen Tips For Pros
01. Reapply your sunscreen if you’re out the whole day. Remember, sunscreen only lasts for 4 hours.
02. If you have acne-prone skin, be careful with your sunscreen choice. Look for explicitly non-comedogenic sunscreen to be safe.
03. A handy tool to check each day's UVA Index, which shows you the level of UV radiation currently in SG. As the chart shows, the UV index tends to be higher - in the dangerous red zone - between around 11.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. each day.
04. Read the fine print. According to the FDA, there are some potentially harmful ingredients in chemical sunscreens. Do your research before you invest in a bottle!
