As this year rolls to a close, it's that time when we start thinking about New Year’s Resolutions! Give yourself a warm hug for getting through this year, pandemic and all.

Most New Year resolutions circle health, fitness and wellness and many see the new year as a fresh start to set new goals, get into the best shape of their lives and quit unhealthy habits. According to The Healthy, getting in shape and getting healthy is right up there with the most popular new year resolutions, along with living life to the fullest.

The upside of the pandemic was that it gave us a reason to keep to our health and fitness goals. Those who had never been fitness enthusiasts embraced fitness. As a result, many new trends in fitness emerged, and it looks like some of them will be here for the long run (pun intended!).

Let’s explore the top fitness trends you should consider in 2022. 

The Great Outdoors vs The Sweaty Indoors

When the doors to gyms and studios closed, we had to choose alternatives to stick to their fitness routines. One popular option was the great outdoors. Cycling and running in open areas became popular and gave us a much needed release from worrying about social distancing.

And boy are we happy that this trend is here to stay. Well, at least in 2022. 

Exploring off the beaten track, and discovering new running and cycling paths and circuits around the heartlands, will help break the monotony. Simply going outdoors for a walk will give you that much needed breath of fresh air, not to mention it is a cracker of a mood booster!

Online classes are all the rage

With the lockdowns and temporary closures of gyms and studios in 2020 and 2021, many gyms pushed their classes online. This proved to be quite successful, especially with the WFH routines we’ve gotten so accustomed to.

The flexibility and number of class options available, live streaming or recorded, means that we can fit in workouts according to our lifestyle and at our convenience. The curve flattened, and several spaces are open again for physical training. However, we are secretly rejoicing that many gyms are continuing their online classes so we can workout at our convenience.

We know fitness apps are not a new thing. However, due to the pandemic, there was an increase in their usage.

The benefits of these apps are similar to online classes; flexibility and convenience. They also offer a plethora of options so you will never be bored or short of a challenge. Since it's on your phone or device, it goes wherever you go. That kind of flexibility and convenience is hard to beat!

Smart wearables are not just fashion accessories

Again, wearable tech is not a new thing. What was a luxury item a few years ago is fast becoming a commodity. We can thank many popular brands for improving designs, making wearable tech more affordable and fashionable.

As we became more health-conscious, the demand for these wearables has also increased. These give us the means to track and monitor basic health and fitness levels. More sophisticated devices can even track your blood oxygen. How cool is that?

Mindfulness FTW

While WFH brings flexibility and convenience, it also means we are constantly on the go, not to mention burnout happens much sooner as lines between work and home blur. As such, the need for self-care isn’t an option anymore, but a priority!

Exercise and fitness is a necessity not just for the body, but for the mind too. So at the end of a long day, if the idea of an intense workout may not be your cup of tea, decompress your mind and body with some meditation, yoga, or a gentle stretching routine.
