Paw-er Workouts with Your Pupper

Paw-er Workouts with Your Pupper

To paraphrase a famous adage, “A dog is a human’s best friend.” Any dog parent will definitely agree that having a canine companion feels like having access to unconditional love. Our bond with them is often just as strong as those we share with people.

You can strengthen that bond while strengthening your core by including your best fur friend in your regular workouts! You can get creative or stick to the tried-and-tested methods. Read our suggestions and see what works best for you and your doggo!

But FURst

Don’t head out the door to the closest trail for a hike with your pet yet. Before getting fit with doggo, ensure your veterinarian has given them a once-over that they are fit to be brought along for activities. You should also get your pup’s shots updated and their flea/tick meds sorted.

Consult with your veterinarian to check if the exercise you have in mind is suitable for your dog. Working breeds like German Shepherds and Jack Russel Terriers may be okay running for an hour, while toy breeds such as pugs and chihuahuas will tire out quicker.

Furthermore, some breeds take on certain activities better than others. Golden Retrievers are big water lovers, while terriers enjoy a good chase. So it’s always best to check with a professional.

And, of course, always watch your new fitness partner during your workout. Your comfort is covered with sweat-wicking, quick-drying, lightweight pieces from the KYDRA Kyro Line, but what about your new workout buddy? Ensure they don’t overheat or become dehydrated, especially if they aren’t used to being included in your energy-burning activities.

Now that we’ve got the reminders out of the way, slip on your ⅞ Kyro Pocket Leggings (perfect for your phone and some cash), pair them with your favourite top and go!

The Great Outdogs!

The Great Outdogs!

Dogs are just like humans in that their bodies utilise sunlight to help them produce Vitamin D, which supplements the amount they get through their diets. Take advantage of a good-weather day and take your pup outdoors. Leash up, pack a baggie (if your pet decides to do their business during the stroll) and head out.

Do You Want To Go Walkies?

The most basic way to do this is to go for a walk. A half-hour walk around the neighbourhood provides a low-impact activity that improves circulation, reduces anxiety, and boosts immunity. Seeing different sights and sounds is great enrichment for your dog and keeps them from becoming bored.

Fancy a change of scenery? Head towards The Southern Ridges for a long and leisurely amble. If you want to explore everything, it will take up to 5 hours, so you may need to take frequent rest stops for smaller or elderly dogs. Want to take it a little slower? Sengkang Riverside Park might be a better option. Bring their favourite fetch toy for added exercise.

Leave Nothing But Woofprints

Leave Nothing But Woofprints

Take it up a notch with your more energetic bestie by taking them on a hike. Just make sure to check if they require a leash or allow free-roaming. The abandoned railway at The Green Corridor is a popular place to hike with your dog, with its exciting sights and empty trails. The uninterrupted 10-kilometre running route is one of the best spots to get a good run in. The terrain is also much better for your dog’s paws than concrete.

If you and your pet are like saltwater, take your run to the dog-friendly beaches (Tanjong Beach, Sentosa is your best bet). Bear in mind that off-leashing is not allowed, and there are only certain areas where pets are welcome.

For more intense activities such as these, slip on the Thea Kyro Bra for better support without compromising on staying cool.

Dogstacle Course

Another great way to raise your resting heart rate while tiring out your four-legged friend is to try your hand at agility and obstacle courses.

Several options in the city, indoors and outdoors, cater to various breeds. While your dog is tackling ramps and hurdles, you’ll also be working up a sweat. Who knows, this might become your next new hobby?

Get Wet

Why stick to land when you can cool off in some water?

If you’ve got a dog that loves the water, do laps with your furever bestie at Sunny Heights on Turf Club road. This daycare and boarding house also offers dog-friendly swimming pools and encourages owners to splash around with their pets for the day.

Is doggo not sure about getting in the water? The staff at Sunny Heights are around to help all dogs ease into the aquatic life.

Downward-facing Dog (literally)

Have you heard of doga (dog yoga)? It’s indeed a real thing that has gained quite a following in Singapore over the last few years.

Puppy Yoga Singapore encourages you to make your furry friend a paw-ticipant in your mat sessions, allotting 35 minutes for yoga and 15 of pure play time and socialisation. This class might not be the most intense one you’ll ever take, but it’s a great way to incorporate your dog into a gentle workout.

Energy levels and physical capabilities are different per pet, and it may take a while to figure out what works best for you. Stay the course, be patient and take cues from your dog’s reactions. Adjust as necessary for what’s best for not only you but your furry best friend.
